Machine identity and recovery
Create a machine account without a browser and keep its recovery identity safe.
On this page
What you need
An installed CLI and a private directory for its identity file. Read the terms and privacy notice before accepting them.
How to do it
- Run metribeacon init --machine --non-interactive --accept-terms --acknowledge-privacy --json. Use --config to choose a private identity file.
- If the connection is interrupted, repeat init with the same file. Do not start with an empty file or a new directory.
- Use recover with the existing identity only when you need to replace its management access. Verify an email address to obtain the normal account allowances.
Good to know
The private identity contains access and recovery material. The default file is ~/.config/metribeacon/identity.json, subject to XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Keep the directory private (0700) and the file readable only by you (0600).
Recovery invalidates the old management credential. Without the saved recovery identity, this recovery method is unavailable.
metribeacon init --machine --non-interactive --accept-terms --acknowledge-privacy --json
metribeacon account profile --json
metribeacon account usage --json
# Explicit recovery using the existing private identity:
metribeacon recover --non-interactive --jsonIf something goes wrong
A repeated init with the same identity should return the same account. Do not publish identity.json or place it in a shared log or repository.
